How to make a webinar succeed? (Article Review # 4)

Assignment number: Article Review # 4

Title: How to make a webinar succeed?

    Author:
    Shama Kabani
    Date: November 1, 2012

    Link: http://upstart.bizjournals.com/resources/advice/2012/10/31/ask-shama-how-to-make-a-webinar.html?market=upstart&ana=rss_ubj_nr

Summary: Don't ruin your webinar by failing to prepare properly. The more time and thought you put into a pre-webinar plan, the higher your chances of success on the day of your webinar. First, start with your audience and choose the right time for your audience to run the live webinar. The best thing about strong content is that you can parlay it across multiple mediums and reach a greater audience.

Relevance: When I saw the word "webinar" first  it was unfamiliar for me. However, after seeing the meaning of the word and how to use it to audiences I think it might be used to educate our future customers who live too far away from me to meet me face to face. If I use this one day  I will prepare properly for audience in order not to fail to educate them.

Quote: "Don't ruin your webinar by failing to prepare properly."

The new feature automatically uploads photos taken on a smartphone to a private album on a user's Facebook profile. If you don't like the idea of your photos automatically sent to your Facebook profile users don't have to activate the feature.

Relevance: I like to look at app design. Photo uploads is the part most young people are interested in.   They often take pictures by smart phone and upload them through social network. Besides, social network plays a role to connect other people with fast, ease. Students will become graphic designer one day included in me. I think we need to look at how it is going on at social network and their design   look. We need to think about attractive design according to people's taste.

    Happy birthday Firefox!

    Article Title:
    Happy birthday Firefox
    Article Author:
    By Patrick Himes

    Article Publication Date:
    November 9, 2012

    URL of Original Article:
    http://www.business2community.com/tech-gadgets/happy-birthday-firefox-0328732

    Article Summary:
Eight years ago today, Mozilla released its own web browser, Firefox, to the world. they were one of the first mainstream open source and user-based projects on the web to really succeed in the spotlight. Adoption of the browser took off like wildfire; the developers had made a browser that people liked. It was different, faster, sleeker and cooler. And it was free! Firefox was the “first alternative browser to really chip away at Microsoft’s Internet Explorer dominance.” It was the first small project from small beginnings that reached prominence quickly. It didn’t have unlimited funding, it wasn’t developed by the greatest minds at some company or on the web, and it wasn’t institutional. But it worked. In many ways, Firefox stands for the potential of the internet. Things were just starting to change in the internet ecosystem towards more open and diverse services and products. Then Firefox burst onto the scene and showed us that we can make whatever we want and we can make it better. Focus on the people and your product will be great.

Relevance to the Class: Internet explore was the most popular browser in the world. It seemed like any browser can not overcome it. However, Google chrome users have been increasing  included me until now. When I read this article it reminds me of Google Chrome. About 2 or 3 years ago, You Tube had gradually stopped their service to internet explore users.  In the context of this situation, Firefox had to do something, which is to provide the first mainstream open source and user-based projects on the web. And it was successful. In our class, somebody use Internet explore, somebody use firefox or google chrome. In order to become Web Designer we should know that their each web browser's strong point, and we should examine how Html language works well on each web browser. This is because some html works really well on Google chrome but not work on internet Explore, which bugs me.

Microsoft rolls out Windows 8 app updates ahead of time

Microsoft rolls out Windows 8 app updates ahead of time

    Article Author: Dara Kerr

Article Publication Date: October 4th, 2012

    URL of Original Article:
    http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57526511-75/microsoft-rolls-out-windows-8-app-updates-ahead-of-time/

    Article Summary:
The launch of Windows 8 is still three weeks away, but the software giant is already in the process of updating some of its built-in apps, including Bing, maps, photos, news, and weather. Some of the app updates that begin rolling out tomorrow have already been announced, while others will come out over the next few weeks. Relevance to the Class: If you are pc users you must be interested in rolling out Window 8. It has new appearance and new application. Even though we use Mac at the class Some of us might use PC included me. It is always pleasant thing to roll out new brand. Key Quote:
We're super excited to be approaching general availability (GA) of Windows 8 and Windows RT. With thousands of new apps in the Store, there are a lot to choose from and tens of thousands of developers have been very busy around the world creating new apps. Across Microsoft we've been busy since August adding new features and improving the apps that come with Windows and will be updating these apps before GA.

Reading and HW for October 17 Class

    1. What do Goto and Cotler think are some important things to identify when assessing audience capabilities? Are there examples you would add given changes in the industry since the book was published in 2005?

In the book it is said that we have to know our audience and start determining their technical capabilities such as their screen resolution, latest realplayer plug in, what kind of browser, what bandwidth. They said that the goal is to identify target audience's technical capabilities. In doing so, we can set standards for the team to work within.
These standards must be in alignment with the expectations of the client. Keep in mind that your key client contact may not be the best person to answer these questions

I feel that this book is a kind of old to this generation. But our grandmother might be able to still use an 800 x 600 screen. The book is a sort of not keeping up with today's trend, but I think it would be better to follow what the book said. we need to consider which plug in target audiences are using, what resolution their computer is applied to. When considering of today's trend, we can consider audience's internet speed, latest updated browser version.

    2. What is scope creep?

Scope Creep is the slow, inevitable migration of a website redesign from a straightforward,
comprehensible project to an out-of-control nightmare. Seemingly insignificant modifications and
unplanned extra time spent handholding and baby sitting your client lead to budgetary increases and
time delays. Scope Creep is subtle; you seldom realize it is happening. At your kick-off meeting, define Scope Creep to both client and team and explain how the various schedules and delivery plans all work
together to keep the project on target.

    3. What software application do the authors recommend using for project management? Why do they recommend using a different application to deliver project management information to a client?

    Microsoft Project.

They say that Microsoft Project is an industry standard in terms of tracking multiple timelines and deliverables. The application's greatest strength is its ability to recalculate an entire schedule based upon a single change. If client feedback is two days late, the program will automatically construct a new schedule for all remaining tasks.

(I am not sure this is a correct answer cause this application is described other than pages 46-85)

    4. There's a proofreading error in the sidebar titled "Project Management Applications"—what is it? (Google may help you here.)

It might represent that I forgot to do what I should have done before? or do I miss the appointment day with client? (honestly I don't know... OTL)

    5. According to the authors, can usability testing be conducted using an online survey? Why or why not?

Book describes that there are many valid forms of feedback (focus groups, online surveys, etc.), but usability testing differs in that it shows what your audience actually does, not what they think they might do. If you're going to test, decide the scope of testing and get it in the schedule as soon as possible.
Online survey can make project team think their audience will behave,
but rather how an individual site visitor actually navigates, finds information, and
    interacts with website.
However, usability testing is one-on-one test with actual site visitors, which is the best way to gather relevant data and real-world input. Conducting usability tests informally throughout a redesign and on
an ongoing basis ensures proper feedback and allows you to adjust accordingly for a
    more successful user experience.
